A read receipt is an opt-in, per-note record of when the note was opened. The viewer tells the recipient the sender will be notified before they reveal; the sender's phone receives a deliberately generic push: "A note was opened."
What it is
Sometimes the whole point is confirmation — the temp password was retrieved, the instructions were seen. The honest version of that feature requires symmetry: if the sender learns something, the recipient knew it would happen.
Why it matters
The mechanics stay minimal. Opened-at times are recorded with the note and shown in your Sent tab; the push carries only the note ID, so nothing about the note's content or settings transits Apple's servers. There is no silent mode.

Can I get receipts without the recipient knowing?
No, and that's a feature. The viewer discloses the receipt before the note is revealed. BurnPony does not do silent read tracking.
